Title: Colours of Tradition

Description of Photography: Kathakali is one of the major forms of classical Indian dance originated in Kerala. It is a "story play" genre of art, but one distinguished by the elaborately colourful make-up, costumes and facemasks that the traditionally male actor-dancers wear. The makeup is based on a certain set of colours each of which is used to represent a particular character. Only natural dyes are used on the face and the process will take hours. In the photograph, the artist is applying the makeup on his face before the play.
