A SERIES OF INTERCONNECTED SPACES

The project 42 Wagholi

The project 42 Wagholi is a weekend house, set in the rural hinterland outside Pune. For the owners, this is a counterpoint to their city home; a

place to enjoy nature, spend time with friends and rejuvenate. The house is designed as a series of interconnected spaces that directly open to landscape. Walls are blurred at the ground level and rooms get their definition, volume and geometry from steeply sloping symmetrical timber roofs. Internal ceilings become a defining character and a starting point for the interior design.

Spatially, the tall internal volume is divided into two parts, the roof and the room, delineated by an articulated bulkhead that carries services, and conceals curtains and lights. rhythmically placed, converging wooden rafters visible from within the rooms form a defining interior character.

Rooms have centrally aligned openings which complement the geometry of the internal ceilings. The paneling of veneer and rattan become wall finishes. This panelling seamlessly integrates with wardrobes & sliding doors. A muted grey floor is an inward extension from the external deck.

Furniture layouts respect roof geometries and maintain the inside-outside flow of spaces. Individual furniture pieces are seen as free standing objects in space and intentionally not built-in. Large and generous bathrooms open into private landscape courtyards. These offer a resort-inspired indulgence complete with a private outdoor shower. Custom designed vanities and the free-standing bathtub in cream terrazzo give a fresh clean feel.

Residents of Pune are fortunate to have pleasant climate for 9 to 10 months in a year. The design of the house works well in this context. It is lit and ventilated completely naturally. Our ‘back to the basics’ approach intends to provide a sensible contextual design that responds seamlessly to the architecture and creates a memorable house for our clients to unwind and reconnect.
