MULSHI: This bungalow for a retired couple emulates colours of nature from its surroundings. | Lovekar Design Associates

Designed by Ketaki Kolambar, Senior Architect, Lovekar Design Associates, Pune, the project won WADE ASIA 2019 'Best Use of Color–Architecture.' Also published in the March 2020 Women Architects Special Issue of SURFACES REPORTER (SR), Here's a sneak peak of the beautiful project here.

The Mulshi House is designed for a retired couple who wanted to live in the middle of nature after having spent their entire lives in urban areas. It is located in Mulshi, which is on the outskirts of Pune. Mulshi is surrounded by mountains on all sides, sparsely inhabited, hence was an ideal location for a serene, secluded lifestyle. The house has been designed by borrowing elements from the local vernacular architecture, but adapting them in a modern manner.

"The sloping terracotta tiled roof gives a natural and earthy texture and also blends with the local architecture. The front Yellow wall aims at giving a strong façade to the bungalow. It also acts as a focal point against which all other colours are used in order to create an interesting composition."

The Mulshi House

The colour palette chosen for the project is warm and earthy which blends with the surrounding landscape. The colours of the landscape change throughout the year from brown to lush green. Ochre Yellow and Dark brown colours merge the structure with the surrounding dry landscape in summers while creating a background to the lush green surroundings in monsoon.

The Grey colour below the sloping roof disconnects the roof mass from the bright coloured walls of the bungalow below & creates a background to the warm colours used.

The Mulshi House

Large open verandahs or decks, which can be used by the clients during most times of the day and the year, are central to the project and the most important too.

The Shahabad flooring & the Jaisalmer stone used in the flooring at the periphery of this deck gives a rustic & neutral background to the colours used.

A skeletal M.S. staircase painted Grey, leading to a linear attic above the living room aims at creating a sculptural feature against the Ochre wall.

Overall, the architecture of the bungalow emulates these colours of nature from its surroundings.
