Advantages:

1. Versatile: Solid surface countertops provide you with seamless joints. These are molded perfectly to fit every corner. It is manufactured without sems and can fit into any shape you desire. There are solid surfaces that mimic the look of wood, stones and granite. These can be used to create a natural look. There are multiple choices available based on designs and color. You will never run out of an option. You can also print certain images on the surface using the process called dye sublimation. It's a permanent technique and looks great.

2. Sealing and painting isn't necessary: There is no need to reseal the surface. There is no need for another coat of finish or sanding. Instead of using paint or resurfacing it when it's aged or dirty, simply use a good cleaner for a change.

3. Durability: Durability of the object will make sure the quality and texture last longer. This way you can save a lot of money. Solid surfaces are very durable. It is impact-resistant and can survive daily wear and tear. Wood is said to absorb moisture when it comes in contact with moisture. It can also dry out and crack. Solid surfaces don't have these negative points. It slightly expands or contracts due to change in the temperature. But it never cracks or absorbs moisture.

4. Antimicrobial feature: The material is non-porous and bacteria-resistant. Materials which have pores in it, absorb moisture. The absorption of moisture can lead to formation of mildew or mold. Solid surfaces don't allow bacteria to sit on the surface. These do not stain or absorb any liquid. These features make solid surfaces a very popular choice for gyms, kitchens, hospitals and retirement homes. Most of the brands have certified products meaning the material has been checked for safety. It's safe when food comes in contact with it. It also does not degrade the air quality in your kitchen.

5. Thermoformable: New technology has led to this feature in some solid surfaces. It is the ability of the surface to bend into the shape of the hot object. Then it comes back into its original shape when cooled.

6. Maintenance: Even if there is any kind of damage, it can be easily sanded out. Cost of repair is also low. It is easy to care for. You can wipe the surface with soap and water. The non-porous aspect makes it easy to clean and maintain. When marred with things like grease spots, makeup or dye, you can clean the surface using an abrasive cleaner.

Disadvantages:

1. Vulnerable to heat: Solid surfaces are not heat resistant. It can start fading or change colour. It can scorch or crack when it comes in contact with a hot pan. If it does not have the thermoformable feature, the surface can warp or get disfigured. It is advisable to use hot pads and cutting boards for some extra protection.

2. Reacts to strong chemicals: When exposed to strong chemicals like harsh cleaners, nail remover, etc., it tends to get damaged.

3. Needs professional help: The installation of solid surfaces cannot be done on our own. It requires professional help to install. You won't be able to find the right tools and expertise for making it a DIY project.

4. Gets scratched easily: Because of its soft material, the surface is likely to get damaged. Scratches are more visible on glossy surfaces. On the other hand, matte and satin are not practical for high traffic areas. Any kind of gouges and cracks will need professional help to get repaired.

5. Cost of material is high: The cost of material is very high. It also involves the extra cost of installation.

Solid surfaces have a lot of different uses. Choose the material that will cater to your specific needs and make the house look beautiful. In India, many brands and verieties are available.
