This 5000 sq ft apartment- named A Midnight Serenade- located in a plush residential complex is designed by Eshita Marwah of /e (by e) and executed in collaboration with V-Create Architects and Studio13 PMC for a family of seven, spanning three generations. The designer instilled the home with an abundance of gorgeous jewel colours-Emerald green, Burgundy red, Sapphire blue, coral white, and more to give an eclectic and vibrant touch to the home. Thse bold and dramatic jewel tones are counterbalanced with a neutral palette to give a warm and sophisticated appeal to the project. “A Midnight Serenade for the midnight blues that sing a song of love and beauty, this home is a labor of love designed to evoke emotions and stimulate the senses,” says Eshita. She shares more about the beautiful project with SURFACES REPORTER (SR). Take a look:

All the hardware, handles, etc. have been custom made of brass, other metals and wood, all throughout the home.
As Marwah met with the clients' socially a few times, she was aware of their design sensibilities. She says, “To begin with, the hardest and the easiest parts of the project were starting with almost no brief, and designing for a client who put complete faith in me and my design sensibilities. I truly believe that the best projects are a result of great clients, great design and execution teams, and creative freedom - and here I got to have it all! “
Designed to evoke emotions, this home has a plethora of handmade elements, and a balance of the old and new worlds in subtle proportions.
Each room designed by the designer reflects the personality of its dweller. “Adhering to my personal belief of spaces being extensions of who we are, while also being experiences that can inspire and brighten everyday life, I’ve designed each room differently, and considered its inhabitants, while maintaining a sense of continuity and a unified tone of voice across the home,” she adds.
Bold Jewel Tones Add Drama and Character
The idea was to give a unique look to each room as per the individualistic personality of each member. And this was achieved by using bold jewel-tone colors.
Every tiny part and corner of this home has been designed to be showcased.
This dramatic colour scheme defines and adds character to each room. The designer used interdependence of elements in design, and worked with a limited material palette in new and playful ways.
Alluring Entrance
The story starts to unfold at the black, white and vermillion entryway. The black and white foyer is made of piccolo mosaic and the blue vestibule area has white marble inlaid with black marble and brass accents.

The flooring segregates as well as ties all the spaces together, where Belgian black marble adorns the larger common spaces, while a majority of the transitional spaces have patterned white, black and gold flooring. The home features dramatic transition areas and bespoke pieces.
Airy and Sunlit Living and Dining Area
The entryway leads to the stunning blue passage, intricately inlaid with marble and brass, into the expansive living and dining areas bound together by a striking Belgian black marble, aglow from the rising sun.
The living room has herringbone wood in the two seating areas. It’s adorned with custom rugs /e, a credenza separating the two spaces especially designed for the space in quartz, wood and brass, along with the dining table made of black, white and grey marble, and the media unit in striking black and white, all /e.
The spacious and airy living area comprises the family and formal spaces, defined by two pockets of herringbone wooden flooring, separated visually by vertical brass fixtures, and physically by custom-made quartz cabinets.

Bedrooms or Jewel Box Rooms
Embellished with different tones of sparkling jewels, the bedrooms feel more like jewel boxes. These are at the two ends of the living space, except the guest/Burgundy Room, which is camouflaged in the blue vestibule entrance with another flush-concealed door.
Inviting abundant daylight, the home sparkles everyday the sun shines.
The Emerald Room has herringbone wooden flooring, with Baroda green marble skirting in parts and soft neutrals to offset the deep shades of green.
The Emerald Bath has a coffered ceiling and dramatic emerald tiles from Keramos, offsetting the whites.
The Rust Room is romantic and airy with mostly whites; The Sapphire Room has tan leather accents against pops of deep blue and a dressing table /e made according to some exact specifications.
The Burgundy Room is mostly black and white, with pops of burgundy in the artwork and the bathroom.
All rooms except for The Winter Castle have wooden flooring.
The Winter Castle has the perfect terrazzo-type white vinyl flooring by Forbo, suited best for the children to play on, with colorblocked mosaic tile skirting.
Colourful piccolo mosaic steals the show as a highlighter used in various forms around the home, including the kids’ bath, and especially throughout the entrance foyer floor extending to the side walls.
Contemporary Home With Modern Elegance and Old World Charm
"Wrapping it in a high-contrast black, white and gold theme, in this home, I've mixed patterns and styles from different eras to form a contemporary space with modern elegance and a touch of old-world glamour,” explains Marwah. Everything from the different skirting designs in all rooms, to the hardware, lighting, rugs, furniture, soft furnishings, and even some artwork and tiles, have been custom-designed with various vendors and detailed to perfection here. The project speaks of her boutique firm’s penchant for everything bespoke and attention to the tiniest of details.
Defined by dramatic transition areas, elements of surprise (behind the various concealed doors), and all the custom-made pieces telling a tale of their own while embracing each other, this transportive home is where functionality and aesthetics come together in comfort and harmony.
