Portuguese studio OODA has revealed plans for a unique skyscraper in Tirana's Hora Vertikale residential development. Comprising 13 staggered cube volumes, each measuring 22.5 meters by 22.5 meters and standing seven stories tall, the design aligns with the typical building height in Tirana. SURFACES REPORTER (SR) presents here some highlighting architectural features of the project:
Set to break ground in spring 2024, the 140-meter-tall building, envisioned as a mixed-use development, will feature apartments stacked over a park with public amenities.
The skyscraper features a unique design composed of 13 staggered cube volumes.
The cubes vary in size, with each measuring 22.5 meters by 22.5 meters and standing seven stories tall.
Unique vertical village
OODA aims to engage the local community, describing the skyscraper as "a unique vertical village set amidst a large green city." The design is intended to create a lasting impact on both city visitors and residents.
Architectural Composition
Three rows of three cubes form the base of the building, with some cubes set apart and slightly rotated to create narrow gaps.
The building is six cubes tall, with two side-by-side cubes on top of the base cubes.
Facades, Balconies & Impact on Landscape
Cubes exhibit various facades, including gridded facades with regular window openings and others with protruding blocks and rounded elements. The uppermost cube features angular balconies supported by columns, adding an architectural focal point.
The building is designed to have a staggered blocky exterior, creating a distinct appearance from all angles. It leaves a striking impression on the landscape, with distinct elevations and perceptions from different views around the city.
Local Materials
OODA emphasizes the use of locally-sourced materials for construction to reduce the carbon footprint and support local businesses.
The building aims to reflect the local vernacular and incorporates unique concepts related to art in each cube.
Height and Surroundings
The skyscraper will rise to a height of 140 meters. A park will surround the skyscraper, contributing to the overall aesthetic and providing a transition in terms of scale.
Distinctive Features
The architectural design incorporates playful interplay and reveals its secrets upon closer inspection.
OODA emphasizes the compositions stepping back from the main road towards the park, creating an adequate transition in terms of scale.
Local Impact and Sustainability
The use of locally-sourced materials and the emphasis on sustainability contribute to the building's positive influence.
