Michael Green Architects Designs World’s Tallest Timber Tower for Milwaukee

Michael Green Architects has revealed plans for a Milwaukee development featuring a mass-timber skyscraper that could become the world's tallest. The project, led by developer Neutral and under city review, will include office, retail, hotel, residential spaces, and public plazas near the Marcus Center, replacing a parking structure designed by Harry Weese. Current renderings show a 55-storey mass-timber tower that would become the world's tallest if completed, surpassing Milwaukee's 86.6-meter Ascent tower by Korb + Associates Architects. Green said the project will unfold in phases to manage the density added to an area of low-rise structures.

MGA founder Michael Green shared that Milwaukee is "on board" with their mass-timber skyscraper, which features a wide, terraced design covered in greenery. The project aims to use "as much wood as possible," though concrete or steel details are still under consideration.

Secondary Cities Leading the Way=

According to the architecture studio, developers and city officials see "secondary cities" in the U.S. as leaders in sustainable development. MGA highlighted that smaller cities offer unique opportunities for sustainable practices, serving as models for larger cities, which are often less experimental. Green noted, "Ambitious projects in smaller cities show they can now surpass the capitals that once dominated skylines. Milwaukee’s forward-thinking leaders are setting a new standard. It's time to pay attention."

The development features mid-rise buildings with consistent materials and shapes. Renderings depict rounded edges, retail spaces, and greenery on building podiums. Green anticipates significant design changes as his studio works with the developer and city to refine the scheme.

Milwaukee's Growth Ambition

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson aims to grow the city's population to one million. "This project will help us reach new heights, set records, and add activity to an underused downtown site," he stated. The city has granted developers exclusive rights for one year to secure financing and approval.
