Use of Unusual colours in Architecture & Design

In the world of brick and mortar, a splash of fresh colours in architecture blows life into it. Colours not only define a project and give it an extra edge but also can give a separate identity to the architecture. Listed here are few projects over the globe that brightens the dwellers’ mind with unusual colours.

LA's Beverly Centre

Light and Color in Architecture

Adjaye Associates, the architecture firm led by David Adjaye, created a ground-up retail development adjacent to the Beverly Centre in Los Angeles with pink concrete. The use of pink concrete is being described as an ‘ode to the luminosity of california‘.

Designed for the Webster, a luxury clothing store, the project comprises a cantilevered concrete façade that references and re-imagines the brutalist shell of the Beverly Center.

At the main entry, a panoramic window comprising three sheets of curved glass creates an angular visual portal.

Sugamo Shinkin Bank

Located in a busy space with frequent movement of cars, bicycles and people the façade of the Sugamo Shinkin Bank is designed to be rhythmical that changes expression as people see from different angles.

Built with the concept of rainbow melody in 2014, the colours of the building appear in and out from the rhythmical repetition of cube. The colourful cubes are described by the architect, Emmanuelle Moureaux, as “dancing like musical notes playing rainbow melody”.

The façade is composed of cubes of four different depths.

Small elevated gardens are built inside 12 cubes, where the seasonal changes in nature are expressed by seasonal flowers like marigold, lavender, and growing trees such as olive tree.

The colours, flowers and trees appear in and out from the repetition of floating cubes, playing rainbow melody.

The melody spreads happiness and comfort to visitors and to the people in the local community.

Shenzhen Neobio Family Park

Light and Color in Architecture

Architecture studio X+ Living created a fun futuristic place within the Shenzhen Neobio Family Park of a shopping centre of China.

The space attracts both children and adults with its use of soft hues and polka dots and twirly architecture. The entire colour scheme consists of pastels and chalky pinks, reds, blues and green. There is a polka-dot slide into a ball pit and giant pastel parasols.

Shenzhen Neobio Family Park occupies the atrium of the shopping centre, creating what X+ Living described as a "dream city" for children.

A bright yellow corridor with parasols suspended over an archway marks the entrance. Inside, an atrium is decorated in sweet-shop hues with a black and white striped floor and a tactile reception desk in shiny red, pink and white bands.

The miniature city itself has children-sized play shops, a pizza parlour, dressing-up zone and a dentist's surgery. Each one sits in colourful, bubble-like structures with rounded edges either side of a carpeted road.

A spiral covered slide covered in black polka dots on a white background curves down from an upper level, depositing the rider in a ball pit at the bottom.

The Residential Building in Dmitrovskoe Shosse, Moscow

Light and Color in Architecture
Located in Dmitrovskoe Shosse, this new residential complex by Iosa Ghini Associati has 47 multi-storey buildings distributed around two common courtyards of ten thousand square meters. The studio broke the monotony of the surrounding Russian suburbs with more distinctive and "humanized" features through the use of some space and colours.

The brilliantly combined aesthetic value, quality of life and sustainability brings a new note of colour to the suburbs. A system of coloured fibre cement panels guarantees a better energy performance of the buildings and gives greater flexibility in the aesthetic-chromatic rendering of the façade.

Housing Building in Carabanchel

Light and Color in Architecture

The multi-coloured clustering of dwellings made by Atxu Amann, Andrés Cánovas and Nicolás Maruri, is built from the attributes of the slab of minimum width perforated with through holes. Apart from the unusual colouring of the façade, another significant character of the housing building is its material. The exterior body is constructed of metal, therefore acts as a ventilated façade.

The building is an ordered set of car bodies whose metallic colours are the choice for users.

IMI International Management Institute, Kolkata

Light and Color in Architecture

Abin Design Studio drew the idea of the concept from the ever-changing sky for the IMI International Management Institute, Kolkata.

The coloured laminate with Vanceva PVB glass on the façade follows no repetitive pattern and is symbolic of the unpredictable nature of the sky. It also represents the vibrancy of today’s youth.

Special efforts were made to ensure create non-monotonous spaces which did not follow expected linear pattern. Circulations spaces and spill out zones have been created along the curved glass façade giving them a more interesting and dynamic feel. Emphasis was given to interaction points not just for students but also for the faculty encouraging exchange of knowledge and ideas at all levels.
