Architect Balkrishna (B.V.) Doshi Turns 93! Updated Architecture Projects of the Pritzker Laureate

B.V. Doshi and his projects
The first Indian architect to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the legendary Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi, turns 93 today! While extending warm wishes, we wish him a happier and healthier life ahead!

Born in Pune on 26 August 1927, Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi is today counted among the best architects of the world. In 2018 at the age of 90India's top architect Padma Bhushan BV Doshi became the first Indian architect to be honoured with the prestigious Pritzker Prize, which is also considered as the Nobel Prize for Architecture. Indeed, winning this coveted prize was not just an honor for him, but also for all Indians. The eminent architect has also been awarded the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Shri for his exceptional service in architecture

Stated his career as an apprentice of Le Corbusier at a very tender age of 20, today he has become one of the most revered modern architects of the nation. He has over 70 years of unfathomable contributions to the development of architectural discourse in India. He is well recognized for his insightful contributions to the architecture of IIM Bengaluru.

Also known as an educator and institution builder, Dr Doshi has so many firsts to his credit apart from being the first Indian to win the Pritzker Prize. He has been the first founder Director of the School of Architecture, Ahmedabad (1962–72), and has also served as the first founder director of the School of Planning (1972–79) and first founder Dean of the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (1972–81). Also, he has been the first founder Director of the Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad. He founded a research institute Vastu-Shilpa in 1956 for Studies and Research in Environmental Design, which has established national and international recognition.

The Ahmedabad-based legendary architect created several multi-purpose complexes, galleries, institutions, housing projects, private residences and public spaces.

His extensive lists of works reflect the life and societal norms around us and are strongly influenced by the works of Corbusier and Louis Kahn and Anant Raje.

Dr Doshi’s excellence in the realm of architecture is the result of the persistent hard work he put in throughout his journey of peaks and valleys. He lives with the aim of preserving India's rich cultural heritage through his exemplary work.
