One of the most notable architects of the modern era, Ar Yashwant Mistry who gave Indian modern architecture a footing at the international level is no longer amidst us. SURFACES REPORTER (SR) pays humble tribute to the architect and wish for his heavenly abode.
A prolific career
Born in 1939, Ar Yashwant Mistry came from a family of extraordinary craftsmen. His father was one of the most notable Interior Designers of his time who designed the interiors of palaces of Gwalior. It was him who imbibed the concepts of architecture and design in Ar Mistry. At the time of independence, when there was an immense pressure to modernize. The issue
of Formal Roots in the context of Contemporary Indian Architecture were largely unanswered. At that time, Ar Yashwant Mistry became one of the prominent figures who have sought to give modern architecture in India a footing at the international level.
An Architect who never sought recognition
Despite being the contemporary of legends like Ar Raj Rewal, BV Doshi and Charles Correa, Ar Yashwant Mistry is much lesser known. A qualified painter from the JJ school of arts, he graduated in architecture from the MSU, Baroda.
His dedication and zeal to architecture comes from his strong belief in timelessness of an architectural work. His unorthodox concepts not only express themselves at the level of the basic idea but also to the level of detailing. For this he spares no efforts in working out the details of the project.
As a teacher he always encourages students to think unconventionally and advocates a freshness of approach. A strong believer in the classical notion of an architect, he believes and expects that architects should be masters of all associated crafts and sciences. He is of the belief that an architect is the trustee of the client’s ideals and his money and is morally bound to deliver the desired product to the client.
Ar Yashwant Mistry will surely be missed and SR pays tribute to the great architect and wishes that his soul rest in peace.
