When Sarah Sham, principal designer at Essajees Atelier, saw this home located in Mumbai’s Lodha Park complex, it looked exactly like any other builder's finished apartment. While it was a three-bedroom house all of the rooms seemed extremely small and cramped. Sarah was wondering what they could do to make sure that this house looked completely individual and unique to all of the other hundreds of apartments that were there in the same complex. She came up with the concept of reimagining the flooring of the house. For this, Sarah removed all existing flooring and replaced it with brightly patterned and textured tiles from Bharat Floorings. The enviable interiors of this minimal and clutter-free abode feature muted palette with pops of colour in each room through patterned and textured flooring, furniture and fabrics. Further, the entire home is accentuated with the works of Shahid Datawala- a Photographer, Lens-based artist, and Furniture designer. Sarah has shared detailed info about the project with SURFACES REPORTER (SR). Take a look:

When Sarah started to work on this project, the house was a sort of shell that mostly homeowners get from the builders at the handover stage- monotonous floor tiles, uneven walls and uninteresting ceiling spotlights.
As the floors set the entire tone and vibe of the house, Sarah decided to change the floor tiles to give the home a refreshing and captivating appeal.
Distinctive Tiles in Each Room
Sarah used a range of custom-crafted Bharat Tiles in the project. “ Our client is the owner of Bharat tiles, and we really wanted to find a way to include his beautiful tiles into the design of the space,” said Sara.
Living Room
White cast-in-situ terrazzo flooring with brass accents is well-coordinated with the neutral colour palette and clean-lined furniture in the living area. The tile work extends into the dining area.
One of the rooms cast in cement features a textured wall by Kemtex. A bespoke curved white sofa gives it a striking aesthetic appearance.
Other elements that add to the enchanting soft-focus feel of this space are a rug from Matteo Cibic’s Wunderkammer collection, recessed magnetic track lights from Flos and a bench and coffee table from Josmo.
Shahid Datawala’s unique second piece gives a splash of vibrancy to the space.
Dining Area
The floors of both living and dining rooms feature the same terrazzo flooring.
She styled the dining area with a bench-style dining table and furnished it with monochromatic upholstered dining chairs. The sparkling touch of brass accent on the dining bench gives it an elegant appeal.
Other highlights of the area are the custom-designed sideboard in the dark green shade, beautiful Junco lights from Flos on the ceiling, and the artworks created by Thukral and Tagra.

Master Bedroom
For the master bedroom, the firm used a custom-made headboard which they pasted onto the wall and which was made especially for this project in black and white terrazzo with a wood flooring.
The firm has done a lot of projects where they used panels with wood fluting and they settled on recreating it in Terrazzo.
Son’s Room
Sarah used accents of grey red and white in the son’s bedroom, which are all of his favourite colours.
She included them on the headboard and upholstery. She also crafted cane shutters crammed in glass and also included a bespoke desk and bookshelf finished in dark wood. A touch of brass can be noticeable in the glowing pendant light sourced locally from a vendor.
Daughter’s Room
As this is the smallest room in the house, Sarah opted for a floating bed, suspended from the ceiling.
Further, the pastel hues and the large mirrors flanking the bed make the room look spacious. The subdued green of the upholstered headboard goes well with the colour scheme of the room and custom-designed hexagonal flooring.
The colourful hexagonal terrazzo tiles in five different pastel shades give a classy appearance to the room. The terrazzo lights in the room are custom-designed by Jade Design Studio in association with Bharat Floorings.
While the apartment is extremely small, the firm has made it look spacious with the right use of colours and design elements.
