Madurai Corporation has outlined plans to construct a processing plant at the Vellaikal dumping yard, the project costing an estimated Rs 600 million. This will be used to treat construction debris and prevent it from being scattered across the city by both builders and citizens. The facility will have a capacity of 100 tonne per day. For all the details, take a look at SURFACES REPORTER (SR)'s report.
The upcoming plant will be put together through a public-private collaboration (PPP) using the design-build-finance-operate-transfer (DBFOT) model. This strategy would assign the private entity with full accountability for the venture during the concessionary span before relinquishing it to the corporation, says Simranjeet Singh Kahlon, Corporation Commissioner.
Roadside heaps of construction waste cause a lot of dust along Madurai's roads and the Vaigai riverfront road is no exception. Apart from the plant, four debris collecting centres will be established at Gatelock Road, Kochadai, Vellaikal, and Kochadai. Recently, the Madurai Corporation initiated a project to get rid of encroachments from the riverbank, and part of that involved cleaning up the building debris.
The waste has infiltrated a large section of the tank near Meenambalpuram. If left without intervention, this will reduce the amount of space available. At the processing centre in Vellaikal, gathered waste will be pulverized to form sand for producing paver blocks. The resulting substance may also serve as landfill filler or even be incorporated into corporate roads.
