H&P Architects have stepped up again with their 'Tile Nest' private residence in the newly developing urban area of Phu Ly, Vietnam's Ha Nam province. This structure expresses a melding of the Nest concept and Ancient Pit House for an architectural effect that looks like a corrugated shell on the outside, perforated or porous, yet generous on the inside. It is hoped this project will draw attention to the studio's Ngói Space building from Hanoi. Read more about the project below on SURFACES REPORTER (SR):
Impressive Outer Shell of “Tile Nest”
The unique outer shell of 'Tile Nest' is composed of endlessly suspended clay tiles arranged into a variety of patterns resembling traditional stacked roofs and brise-soleils. Its porous surface is enhanced by transitional green balconies at varying heights - hosting captivating views and contributing to the indoor microclimate.
H&P Architects note that, despite its familiarity and popularity among Vietnamese people, tile has been used unexpectedly within the house creating contrasting yet intertwined experiences; ones that are enjoyed through sunshine reflection, wind, and scents of foliage – an architecture deeply rooted in nature.
In conclusion, taking into account the former cemetery in close proximity, the studio proposed excavating the old soil layer prior to construction, providing opportunity to use this area of the home to create distinguishable features and utilise geothermal energy.
