Green Commitments in Action:
Merino’s sustainability vision is closely aligned with 16 out of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a feat Mr. Lohia said the company is proud of. He detailed several projects under Project Nirmal, a flagship initiative encompassing afforestation, clean energy, and waste management.
Some notable highlights include:
- 10 million saplings planted around Hapur and ongoing in Vadodara, with plans to expand.
- 75% of energy needs met via renewable sources including 11 MW of solar power.
- In-house production of biocompost and vermicompost for agricultural use.
- A 50kVA generator running entirely on bio-waste, currently in pilot phase.
- Implementation of Miyawaki forests around factories, reducing surrounding temperatures by up to 6°C and improving air quality.
Water Positive & Low Emission Manufacturing:
Mr. Lohia underscored the company's success in water conservation: “We use water in our processes, but thanks to rainwater harvesting and other initiatives, we put more water back into the ecosystem than we take out.”
On the air quality front, he proudly shared that Merino won a case against the NGT (National Green Tribunal), which validated that the company's factories emit cleaner air than the ambient air surrounding them. “We use advanced filtration systems and waste heat recovery to ensure we go beyond compliance,” he added.

Product Innovation – Merino Marine:
Concluding the session, Mr. Lohia announced the launch of Merino Marine, a sustainable, low-VOC, high-water-resistant chipboard designed for environmentally conscious applications. “It’s a green product that doesn’t just perform - it protects the health of both users and the planet,” he said.
