Located in Neelankarai, a locality situated in the south of Chennai, this project named 'Den' is a lavish contemporary villa designed by the adroit design team of Ajay Kora Mani Architects. The project features a unique trapezoidal façade of horizontal and vertical lines with a vertical garden. As a second home to relax and rejuvenate for themselves and their guests, the “Den” isolated, at the same time a part of the existing home at Eden Villa, dials up a new definition of uber luxury.
The client's brief to the architect was for something contemporary which radiates a sense of space with an abundance of natural light. "The design does not shy away from its obvious opulence which is achieved by the amalgamation of refined elegance along with the use of a consistent palette of contemporary aesthetics with functional use of space and materials," shares the design team.
The project showcases a design, plush with modern ideas coupled with the use of muted colours, contrasting textures and materials with the capability of using custom-curated lighting, to transform them into colourful vibrant spaces at a switch of a button.
Externally the two-storey building with an interesting façade of horizontal and vertical lines with a vertical garden cladding the northern wall, make the building blend with its surroundings.
The eastern and southern wings, end in a trapezoidal form to maximize the view of the verdant landscape and basketball court.
The double-height entrance foyer, clad with floor-to-ceiling glass, in a light, green hue overlooks the artistically landscaped sculptured garden and existing residence in the background.
Mirror and wood-inspired ceiling in the double-height entrance lobby
The double-height entrance lobby with its customized 10’0’’ high,hand-blown glass fluted chandelier adorns the rich mirror and wood-inspired ceiling which adds to the grandeur within. The foyer overlooking the pergola-covered landscaped courtyard with its exclusively designed water feature and a vertical rain shower fountain bathed in colours which can be automated to any hue as and when required, adds to its rich dramatic feel.
The solid black Italian marble-clad staircase along with its clear glass handrails contrasting the Breccia Aurora Italian marble flooring of the lobby gives one the impression of the staircase being sculpted from a monolithic stone. The custom lighting along the stairs adds to the visual feast as you move to the upper floors.
Capacious home theatre opening out to a balcony
The upper level has a spacious media/home theatre space that opens out to a balcony overlooking the lawns, and 2 bedrooms for the children done in a contemporary style using rich BrazilianSantos veneers and muted colours, which creates refreshing views of greenery and the green spaces.
The Sauna and Jacuzzi room showcases design plush with modern ideas and innovative use of space and thoughtfulness put into detail.
The entertainment room with its seamless corner-to-corner-customized double-glazed light green tinted glass in the shape of a trapezoid sits in the north, giving the space a panoramic view of the landscape.
The flamed leparto finish blue pearl granite deck which shimmers and gleams under the lights, functions as an extension for parties and flows onto the lawns.
Arresting bar counter
The striking and engaging bar counter with its fully lit blue agate counter top whose lighting can be changed to mirror that of the false ceiling sit at one end of the room, the muted colours and designs used for the furniture, upholstery and drapes make it dramatic and unique.
The other end of the room houses the giant projector with comfortable leather seating and the clients' collections from their travels adorn the walls on one side with vibrant paintings adorning the other.
The design narrates a tale of trust between the client and the architect and has the client's distinctive effusive personalities infused into the design.
The “Den” is rich in detail with refined taste and the striking features of this project can be seen in the unique experiments with aesthetics, it breaks the norms of conventional interior design at different levels, which makes it a true oasis at Eden.
