Titanic-Like Home, Designed By A West Bengal Man, Making Waves in the Architecture World

Who does not want to have their own home? Being able to live without having any tension of paying rent and the freedom to paint the walls as per their choice or add decor items as per their predilection. Materializing the same is Mintu Roy, a resident of the Darjeeling district of West Bengal who brought his dream of living on a ship into a reality by building a Titanic ship-like house. Read more about Mintu and his intriguing home in detail below at SURFACES REPORTER (SR).

Lived in Kolkata, Mintu is a 52-year-old resident of the Hellencha district of North 24 Parganas, settled in the Fasidawa area of Siliguri around 20-25 years ago. As he was undergoing financial stress, he moved to North Bengal in search of a job and that is where he began bringing his dream of building a home resembling the famous Royal Mail Steamer (Titanic) to life.

What Inspired Him?

Talking about what drew his attention toward creating such an extraordinary abode to live in, Minu recalls, "Most of my childhood was spent in Kolkata, around the Bowbazar area. The time of Durga Puja is one of my fondest memories. I watched people flocking to pandals even days after the puja ended. It was one such pandal that set the spark to make a memorable home for me and my family."

Learny Masonry To Realize His Dream

Minty tried to rope in many engineers for the project, but they did not believe that a house could be made like this and he was left with no choice but to start building the house on his own.

He also hired masons. However, due to financial difficulties, the work got stalled. He realised that accomplishing his desired structure would need triple the amount he had estimated. When Mintu understood that he did not have enough money to pay masons, he went to Nepal for three years to learn masonry in order to fulfil his dream of a ‘Titanic ship-like Home’. So far, he spent almost 15 lahks on his house.

Design Details

Mintu started constructing the ship home in 2010. It is 39 feet long and 13 feet wide. With a height of 30 feet and standing on 9.5 decimal lands, the home has become the talk of the town in the area. Although the project is still under construction, the exterior of the building looks quite impressive. Roy plants crops and sells them to save money for the further construction of the house.

Roy has decided to name the house after his mother. Roy expects that the project will be finished by next year. He will create a restaurant on the top floor later on as it will help him to earn some income from there.
