BREAKFAST, a Brooklyn-based new media artist studio, introduces "The Pearl" on Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas. This colossal kinetic sculpture, setting a world record as the largest of its kind, stands at 13.7 meters with a 16-meter diameter, showcasing nearly 3,000 computer-driven kinetic tiles. REad more about this on SURFACES REPORTER (SR) below:
Inspired by the calmness and ever-changing nature of the sea, "The Pearl" mimics natural phenomena such as rolling waves, gentle breezes, shooting stars, and the dynamic ocean surface. What makes it special is that it responds to real-time tidal and wind data from the Caribbean. This means "The Pearl" keeps changing, showing how the ocean feels at that moment.
Comprised of 3000 Kinetic Tiles
"The Pearl" stands proudly at a towering height of 13.7 meters, with a diameter stretching 16 meters. Comprising nearly 3,000 computer-driven kinetic tiles, this breathtaking sculpture captures the essence of the ocean in an unprecedented display of artistic innovation. Recognized as a landmark achievement, "The Pearl" pushes the boundaries of contemporary art.
Creating "The Pearl" for Icon of the Seas took more than four years of hard work by BREAKFAST. They had to think of new ideas, carefully design each part, and make everything from scratch. Each tile is carefully organized following the Fibonacci sequence.
This shows how dedicated the studio is to making things with great skill and attention to detail. Now, "The Pearl" is a part of Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, providing an exciting experience for people to connect with the rhythm and heart of the ocean.
