Nestled near the coast in Kuvathur, just 80 kms from Chennai, Karai is a special weekend home that mixes old and new styles. Patterns of Mangalore tiles and mud mortar instil an earthy look and feel to the entire project amidst the green backdrop. One of the most captivating features of this home is the glassladen inverted U-shaped flat roof junctions. They not only allow natural light to flood the spaces within the property but also create mesmerizing kaleidoscopic patterns, adding a touch of magic to every corner.
The painted steel columns support the roof and collect rainwater. The house also uses CSEB blocks from Auroville, combining regional techniques and reclaimed materials. Local stones have been utilized to make interesting floor patterns; the corridor is decorated with handloom -inspired blocks. Another interesting highlight of this house are the sixty-two window shutters procured from old torn-down homes. The shutters have been repurposed into new doors and windows by arranging them in different ways.
