The nation is ready for meetings ahead of India's presidency of the G20 summit, with Kashmir’s Srinagar set to host the third G20 Tourism Working Group meeting between May 22 and 24, 2023. Read SURFACES REPORTER (SR)’s complete report below:
The third G20 Tourism Working Group meeting is scheduled to happen in the months of April-June when the Srinagar and Leh regions are at their scenic best. The venue is the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), which is situated on the banks of Dal Lake. Almost a renovation amount of Rs 7.5 crore has been handed over for the upgradation work.
This will be Jammu and Kashmir’s first crucial global event since the state got split into the two UTs of J&K and Ladakh in August 2019. This division has nullified the state’s special status under Article 370 of the Constitution.
Major Focus Of The Meeting
The aim of this tourism stakeholders’ meeting is to boost the prospects of tourism in the state. Apparently, more than 100 delegates and non-ministerial members will represent G20 nations. Aside from G20 members, delegates from guest countries and many global organisations will also attend the summit.
The foreign delegates will also be taken on a sightseeing tour to Baramulla, Dachigam National Park, and also to the ski resort of Gulmarg.
The UT government will also conduct a large event to emphasize film tourism in the region.
Srinagar Gears Up For G20 Meeting On Tourism
Preparations for the G20's 3rd Tourism Working Group Meeting in Srinagar are in full swing. The administration is working out on providing multi-level security and making arrangements for traffic diversions as well.
Furthermore, the Narbal-Gulmarg stretch, which is the road to Gulmarg from Srinagar has been given a new look, and the Nehru Guest House along with other huts in Chashmeshahi are being refurbished.
The special medical task force, including advanced life, support mobile ambulances will also be set up at the venues and excursion sites.
Positive International Branding of the UT
The high-profile G20 meeting will serve as an opportunity for India to display to the entire world the reality of the country's returning to normalcy in the UT. However, the announcement of this grand meeting came in between the opposition from Pakistan and China. Several foreign countries, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, and France, which are now G20 leaders, have designated the UT as a danger or no-go zone and issued travel warnings to their citizens.
Though this event gives an opportunity to India for the international branding of the UT. It is also being seen as an opportunity to disapprove of Pakistan’s fake claim of human rights violation in the Kashmir Valley. Subsequently, the event will increase the number of tourist visits in the state and will make it a safe and secure destination for future investments.
The G20 event in Srinagar is India's third venue for the meeting after its inaugural tourism working group meeting in February at Rann of Kutch in Gujarat and its second meeting in April in Siliguri, West Bengal. There will be a total of 215 G20 meetings held in different state capitals and UTs of India.
