Known for creating products within a 100 per cent circular and sustainable process, Milan-based design studio Krill Design has released its range of the world’s first circular design lamps made from orange peels.
Rekrill Orange is made from orange peels.
Led by Ivan Calimani, Martina Lamperti and Yack di Maio, the studio aims at intercepting and recovering waste from the production of paper, glass and plastic. The trio realised that for the organic by-products of the food chain, there are no virtuous solutions. That is when the three founders converted this problem into an opportunity by experimenting with the creation of innovative materials, combined with the 3D printing method that gave life to a successful and environmentally friendly production process.
The designers turned to orange peel to create the lamp on account of the citrus fruit's ubiquity in Sicily, Italy.
Often considered as waste, Krill Design’s patented process intercepts orange peels, coffee grounds, eggshells and other resources from the food supply chain by turning them into bio-material from which they make zero impact, eco-design 3D printed products.
The Sicilian orange peels are 3D printed to avoid any form of waste during production.
Krill Design’s patented bio-material, Rekrill is 100 per cent biodegradable and compostable, where 1 kg of bio-material corresponds to 1 kg of CO2. Ohmie, the orange lamp, is made from a single body. From the orange peel texture of the outer surface to the subtle layers of 3D printing and its smell, Ohmie lamp takes us on a journey through the senses. The lamp is designed using as little material as possible. Rekrill Orange is made from orange peels. Natural, velvety and robust, Rekrill Orange offers unique colours, smell and texture to the lamp.
Before being 3D printed, the peels are ground to a fine powder and combined with vegetable starch at a compounding facility.
The designers turned to orange peel to create the lamp on account of the citrus fruit's ubiquity in Sicily, Italy. Sourced from a family-owned food producer in the Messina province of Sicily, each lamp is made from the discarded peels of two or three oranges. The lightweight lamp is 23 cm tall. After use, the lamp can be broken down by hand into smaller pieces before being tossed away into household organic waste, which is disposed of in composting facilities where it is turned into compost or biofuel.

The Sicilian orange peels are 3D printed to avoid any form of waste during production. Upon arrival at the Milan office, the peels are dried. The organic scraps need to have moisture levels below 4 per cent. Before being 3D printed, the peels are ground to a fine powder and combined with vegetable starch at a compounding facility. The orange biopolymer is produced in the form of pellets. The orange filament from the pellets is extruded and used within a 3D printer.
