RSHP wins the competition by BNP Paribas for a mixed-use lot in Paris's La Défense,, hailed as the world's first post-carbon global business district. The proposal's focal point is two buildings with prefabricated wooden structures, targeting waste reduction, lower carbon emissions, and quicker construction. Check out SURFACES REPORTER (SR)’s complete report on this.
The project, dedicated to revitalizing the urban commercial district currently overshadowed by road infrastructure, aligns with the district's sustainability goals by minimizing embodied and operational carbon emissions.
Prefabricated Wooden Structures in Twin Towers
The key feature of the proposal comprises two buildings with prefabricated wooden structures, aimed at reducing building waste, carbon emissions, and construction time.
One tower, boasting a sleek design, will house 15 residential floors, while the other, with a low profile, will feature a green roof and six to eight floors of flexible office space.
Sustainable mixed-use spaces and recreational amenities
These structures will border a landscaped promenade, connecting to new public spaces and pocket parks, as well as linking with pedestrian and bicycle paths and the surrounding public transportation network.
The firm’s proposal extends beyond architecture to include mixed leisure, sports, and entertainment facilities, such as a 1,400-square-meter food court, an indoor market, terrace areas, climbing facilities, yoga spaces, and a 250-square-meter event pavilion.
Energy-efficiency and passive design strategies
Utilization of energy-efficient and passive design approaches, recyclable interiors, and the future adaptability of the structures are integral aspects.
The project, developed in partnership with Paris-based AREP, landscape architecture firm Vogt, engineering firm Ingerop, and consultants EODD and Socotec, strives to support La Défense's aspiration to be the world's first post-carbon business district.
