Ar Anshul Chodha, Principal Architect at Sanctuary Architects & Designers, Joins WADE Asia as Juror

Anshul Chodha is the Principal Architect at Sanctuary Architects and Designers, where he has dedicated 20 years to integrating architecture, design, ecology, and heritage into every project. As a versatile professional, Anshul wears multiple hats: he is an architect, designer, creative entrepreneur, restaurateur, quirky developer, and mentor.

  • Name: Ar Anshul Chodha
  • Firm Name: Sanctuary Architects & Designers
  • Location: Bengaluru
  • Top Projects: Manipal Institute of Technology; IIM Bangalore; Tansen; The Open Box; Aira

In his role as a committee member with the Indian Institute of Interior Designers (IIID) for the past eight years, Anshul has contributed significantly to the design community. He is currently engaged in a variety of projects that highlight his commitment to sustainability and heritage. This includes working on projects in highly eco-sensitive areas, developing new sustainable approaches for large residential developments, and restoring heritage sites.

Anshul is also involved in an innovative prefab venture called ‘ZenDen’ and is expanding his mother’s 50-year-old restaurant brand, Queen’s. His diverse interests and expertise reflect his dedication to both contemporary design and timeless traditions.

Chodha enjoys designing spaces that balance subtlety with reinvention. He focuses on simplicity, with careful detailing to achieve a unique aesthetic. His approach often involves minimizing enclosed spaces and integrating the outdoors, blending landscape and structure.

Key Projects:

  • Manipal Institute of Technology: The building’s aesthetic, characterized by clean lines and thoughtful detailing, aligns with Chodha’s philosophy of achieving simplicity through intricate design elements.
  • IIM Bangalore:The design skillfully integrates contemporary architectural styles with traditional elements, showcasing Chodha’s talent for blending different design philosophies. This approach not only honors the cultural context but also introduces modern functionality.
  • Aira: The intimate layout of Aira demonstrates Chodha’s proficiency in spatial planning, ensuring that each area of the lounge and terrace is used effectively while maintaining a sense of privacy and comfort.

His dream project is designing a city or country of the future. He considers his own office, a 2,000 sq. ft. space built on a tight budget and timeframe, as a groundbreaking project. It was designed to be easily dismantled and relocated if needed. The office features a lightweight Aerocon block roof using an age-old vault technique, blending traditional and modern materials.

For Chodha, constant reinvention is key to staying relevant. He believes innovation in design involves reinterpreting or reinventing functional solutions sustainably, integrating art and science to meet evolving user needs.

Get ready to connect with Ar Anshul Chodha at THE WADE ASIA, a premier awards event celebrating outstanding achievements and excellence of women in architecture and design.
