Situated within the prestigious DLF Aralias in Gurugram, the Aralias residence is a masterful blend of contemporary and classic styles, striking a balance between sophistication and playful individuality. The home belongs to a young couple whose personality and lifestyle shine through every corner of the space. Conceived as a renovation project, it was entrusted to Saba Kapoor, Co-Founder, Nivasa. The result is a home that retains the charm of its original walnut wood details while introducing fresh textures, innovative materials and custom furniture pieces. Know on SURFACES REPORTER (SR) how this home stands as a testament to the idea that comfort, personality and sophistication need not exist in opposition but can, in fact, complement one another.

Customized in black for Aralias, the swing’s geometric straight-line patterns create a sense of openness, while its whimsical form adds playfulness.
Eclectic elegance
The design ethos of Aralisa embraces diversity in aesthetics, resulting in an environment that feels tailored and highly personal. Black and white tones provide the foundation, rather than just creating starkness. They are articulately interwoven with organic shapes and tactile elements that inject youthful vibrancy. At the heart of the home lies the living area, a cozy yet sophisticated space where textures, tones and forms converge in visual harmony. A striking L-shaped sofa anchors the room, its rounded edges seamlessly flowing into the seat and backrest. Designed with both elegance and comfort in mind, it creates a natural gathering spot for the family. Opposite sits a chaise that visually connects the space to the adjoining bar. Close at hand, three sleek white seats rest on a slim metal bench accented with bold black strips, a composition that adds graphic drama. Rotating poufs in shades of grey and black provide versatility and playfulness, completing a space that is eclectic in character yet cohesive in spirit.

Sustainability finds expression in the dining area, where a table crafted from reclaimed wood becomes a focal piece.
One of the defining highlights is the bar area, designed not just as a functional corner but as an aesthetic statement. Spanning an impressive 8ft in length, the bar commands attention while maintaining subtle elegance. Its rectangular form is softened by curved detailing along the front, while the facade features a meticulously hand-finished gradation transitioning from deep black to warm brown, evoking the richness of natural wood. This effect is complemented by cane detailing at the back, lending both texture and warmth. A grey marble countertop runs across the length, adding a note of refinement. The overall result is a bar that feels sculptural yet inviting, embodying the home’s balance between contemporary flair and timeless elegance.

Character and comfort
Sustainability finds expression in the dining area, where a table crafted from reclaimed wood becomes a focal piece. Its open grain surface celebrates the natural beauty of timber, while sleek metal legs lend stability without overshadowing the organic character of the top. Beyond its aesthetic presence, the table serves as a statement of conscious design, encouraging mindful consumption and celebrating the ethos of preservation. Here, dining becomes not only about nourishment but also about appreciating the responsibility of living in harmony with the environment.

Connected to the dining and living areas is a balcony that opens onto sweeping views of the lush golf course. It is here that one of Nivasa’s most iconic pieces, the bird cage swing, finds its place. Customized in black for Aralias, the swing’s geometric straight-line patterns create a sense of openness, while its whimsical form adds playfulness. Contrasting this bold piece is a white seater that continues the story crafted indoors, creating a tranquil nook where the residents can relax amidst nature’s serenity.

This series draws inspiration from the Japanese concept of Tsundoku, which means celebrating a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and exploration. Translating this philosophy into design, the collection experiments with weaving, fusing fabric with wood and combining materials such as metal and yarn. The woven fabric upholstery of the bed exemplifies this innovation, handcrafted meticulously to blur the boundaries between functional furniture and artistic craftsmanship. Complementing the bed are two rotating chairs positioned to encourage intimate conversations, while a small lounger enhances comfort.
