Nestled in the warm and serene embrace of nature away from the hustle & bustle of the city life, Koro Nest is a sustainable abode fashioned by designer duo Rashi and Rachita Singh. Their love for nature, interest in the curves of Fibonacci and fondness for sketching shaped the design of this beautiful home in the lap of the Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh. Their desire to use everything natural made them incorporate sustainable materials like bamboo and bamboo mattes. One can actually experience the presence of ethereal beauty in this place. “We never knew that our Holiday in the hills would take us this far, and we would be able to unleash our creativity in the mountains,” said Rashi Singh while telling SURFACES REPORTER (SR) about the creation of the Koro Nest. The sisters tell us how an idea led to a sketch (on a train journey to the site) and finally the execution. Scroll down to read:

To recreate the experience of being in the womb of nature, we knew nothing better than the Fibonacci spiral would be the inspiration behind the design process.
As the sketches were brought to the site, the contractors, hesitant at first, decided to give it a go. Girder, mild steel beams and the contractors' spirit worked like a charm for the design execution. Finished in pinewood from the inside and hand-cut cement sheet from the outside, The Koro Nest was born.
Interiors- Inspired by Natural Landscape
The interiors were inspired by ‘contrast’. The contrast of the forest around the home.
The staircase, which was initially finished in granite, was completed in bright mosaic and subtle beige.
They painted the entrance lobby pink in contrast to the black and white flooring. Colours such as deep pink and yellow were used to create vibrant ceilings.
Kitchen shutters were finished in pink, blue, yellow laminates.
Wood stained white to let the colours and the views dominate. Staying at an under-construction site led them to paint wall murals to create a personal and a storytelling experience in passages and hallways.
Use of Organic and Natural Materials
The designer duo wanted to fuse organic and natural elements in the design process.
Hence they curved the corners and used sustainable materials such as bamboo and bamboo mats for the ceiling and jute and cane for lighting.

Natural elements such as stone walls made to support the structure were kept exposed in the rooms.
A large part of the mountain was kept exposed and included in the sub-level as a design element. Gravel and concrete mix led out as flooring. To incorporate the adjacent pine trees, balconies were extended with mild steel beams to create decks.
Nest Sets The Tone For Facade
Instead of sloping roofs, arcs were created, which also solved the snow and water stagnation problem.
They made dummy balconies and windows inspired by the old school cottage feel in the storybooks.

About the Designers
Rashi and Rachita Singh are designers who perceive architecture as art, which deals with a human emotional experience like excitement, joy, adventure. Being an architect himself, their father, Mr Inder Pal Singh, raised them with a vision to explore the spectrum of design. The designers aim at creating spaces that translate into an experience. Infusing passion, individuality, and a sense of fun with functionality drive them to the design approach. They search for aesthetics in art, nature and architecture and apply them in design. They also believe a design plan should contribute to individual and collective well-being, so their design process focuses on sustainability. But above all, they believe in bringing love to everything they create.
