Designed by Milan studio JM Architecture, this holiday home in Italy is covered with glossy white concrete panels with a pentagonal plan. The dwelling is named Pinwheel after its distinctive shape, which was JM Architecture's solution for the client's "only request" – that it offers views of the nearby Lake Maggiore and surrounding alpine valleys. JM Architecture founder Jacopo Mascheroni pointed out that the building constraints and the client's needs led to a simple pentagonal geometry for their compact house. The edges have been rounded to provide a more fluid integration into the terrain, while the fin-like façade openings break up this continuity creating the appearance of a pinwheel.
Concrete Basement for Efficiency
In order to minimise maintenance and construction time due to the site's remote location, Pinwheel uses a concrete basement level to support the upper timber structure, which was prefabricated.
There are two bedrooms and bathrooms above ground, flanked by a study, kitchen and living area. In the centre of the home, a circular skylight illuminates a staircase leading to a movie room and storage area in the basement.
Unmatched Charm of Penta-View Rooms
Each room has a distinctive view of the surrounding countryside thanks to windows on four of the five sides of the pentagonal design, which are sheltered from glare with projecting aluminium fins. Pinwheel's sleek, white façade is carried through to the interior, with curved white-plastered walls dividing the bedrooms from the living space and kitchen, both of which include white furniture and cupboards.
Mascheroni explained that after reaching the pentagon shape as a synthesis of restraints and requirements, a light, pure and simple finish strengthened the clean geometrical form. "It's a white pebble lying in the landscape that stands out and fits in."
A sliding door in the study leads to a white-gravel patio with a tree that is lit at night by up lighters and a strip of lights that loops around the home. The heat pump system at Pinwheel is fueled by a nearby photovoltaic farm.
