Bengaluru has achieved another remarkable milestone. The city, often referred to as the tech capital, has introduced an innovative project – a 3D-printed post office, marking a pioneering achievement in India. Positioned in the vicinity of Ulsoor, specifically in Cambridge Layout, this post office was erected through the utilization of cutting-edge 3D-printing technology. The post office boasts a spacious area of 1,000 square feet. Read SURFACES REPORTER (SR)’s complete report below:
Inauguration of the post office was conducted by Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday. It was constructed in 43 days and has a built-up area of 1,021 sqft, compared to 10 months for conventional construction. Vaishnaw described the post office as "the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat '', saying: "It is a technology demonstrator. As this becomes mainstream, more initiatives will be launched to advance this technology."
Construction of 3D Printed Office
As part of its construction, Larsen and Toubro Construction used 3D Concrete Printing Technology. The project was originally scheduled to take 45 days, but was completed in 43 days. IIT Madras provided structural design assistance to the construction team.
The construction process involved the gradual layering of fast-setting materials, resulting in a unique and well-defined structure. To attain its distinct design, a specially crafted robotic arm extruder was employed, enabling a technique known as contour crafting.

At the inauguration, Mr. Vaishnaw was full of praise for Bengaluru and its energetic and positive nature. He commended the 3D post office building, stating that it illustrated a new picture of India while representing the country's progressive spirit. Supporting this idea, P.C. Mohan suggested that 3D printing technology should be adopted by not only the postal department but other government departments too, as it could be a cost-effective solution with designs tailored to each site.
The postal department released a special cover to celebrate India's first 3D printed post office at Cambridge Layout, Bengaluru. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his enthusiasm on social media platform X, emphasizing that the nation should be proud of this milestone. He also highlighted the advantages offered by 3D printing technology over conventional construction methods such as cost-saving and more flexibility. Finally, he complimented those who dedicated themselves towards this project.
