Situated within the Shenzhen Bay Super Headquarters Base, the project stands adjacent to a 400m twin tower development by Zaha Hadid Architects. Named the Scenic City scheme, it encompasses two million sq ft of office, retail, hotel, and cultural spaces.
Below Ole Scheeren’s towers, a common podium will feature JD World, a cultural venue. Surrounding buildings will create an 'urban spine', incorporating amenities such as a theater and exhibition space.
The towers feature vertical louvres on their facades designed to mimic the cascading waterfalls characteristic of southern China's Lingnan region, which encompasses Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
These louvres intermittently open to offer glimpses into the interior spaces of the towers, creating what Scheeren describes as 'in-between spaces'. According to Scheeren, these openings enable a seamless flow of life and nature into and out of the buildings.
Büro Ole Scheeren, known for the CCTV Headquarters in Beijing, won an international competition to design JD.com's new headquarters in Shenzhen's burgeoning tech district. The 200-meter-tall project is slated for completion by late 2027.
