Populous noted that Aramco Stadium's curved design aims to be "instantly and uniquely recognizable." As part of an 800,000-square-meter masterplan for Al Khobar's Sports City, the design is set to become an iconic football venue and a symbol of Saudi Arabia's ambition to make Al Khobar a global sports destination.
Lead architect Rhys Courtney noted that the stadium spans nearly a square kilometre, connecting seamlessly with the Sports City district. He emphasized that the project is globally ambitious, aligning with Saudi Arabia's goal to make Al Khobar a top sporting destination.
Aramco Stadium's Spiralling Design
Aramco Stadium's spiralling exterior will feature overlapping panels inspired by the rotation of waves and natural spiral motifs. The panels will include openings for natural light, with ramps and walkways following the exterior's curve, guiding visitors into the elliptical seating bowl.
Populous states that the seating bowl's design ensures unobstructed views of the pitch from every seat while maximizing natural ventilation. The stadium will seat 47,000 spectators for sporting events, with the capacity expandable to 55,000 for events like music concerts.
Interior Design and Masterplan
Populous-owned Jump Studios will handle the interior fit-out and hospitality spaces. The masterplan will also include community amenities for a top-notch sports and entertainment experience.
The project will feature retail, sports facilities, and public spaces to promote social interaction. Populous aims for LEED Gold certification, the second-highest rating from the LEED green building program.
