The architecture firm IBUKU in collaboration with Jörg Stamm and UK-based structural engineering firm Atelier One has recently finished the construction of the Arc gymnasium for the world-famous green school-Kecamatan Abiansemal- in Bali, Indonesia. The project has become a center of attraction owing to its complex double-curved roof that is made entirely from bamboo. The firm used tensioned anticlastic gridshells with arches to form the drape-shaped looking structure. Completed in 2021, the project, dubbed The Arc at Green School, displays an “unprecedented structure that appears delicate and lightweight but still has incredible geometric strength. It further highlights the firm’s devotion to using bamboo as a building material showcasing its malleability, durability, and its beauty. Spread over an area of 760-square-metre, the school portrays the amazing way of using bamboo material. The school encourages sustainability through learning in a natural environment. The protective roof sheltering encompasses a multifunctional sports court.
The firm is known for the use of bamboo and other natural materials in the building. With this construction, the firm pushes the boundaries and suggests new ways to use this zero-carbon material.
The Green School was designed by its founders John and Cynthia Hardy's daughter Elora Hardy and her studio IBUKU in association with bamboo architect Jörg Stamm and structural engineering firm Atelier One.
19-Meter Span Bamboo Arches
Described as "the first building of its kind ever made", the Arc at Green School is made using a bundle of 14-meter tall bamboo arches in traversing parabolic arcs spanning 19 meters interconnected by anticlastic gridshell surfaces that gives strength to the structure from curving in two opposite directions.
The fusion of different materials creates an illusion where the roof looks like a drape between the arches, yet this twisted formation gives strength to the entire structure.
Engineering company Atelier One says, “the two systems together create a unique and highly efficient structure, able to flex under load allowing the weight to redistribute, easing localized forces on the arches.”
Large Inner Space With Minimal Material
According to the team, the Arc employs one of nature’s incredible strategies for designing voluminous spaces with minimal materials. As the team explains, "within a human ribcage, a series of ribs working in compression is held in place by a tensioned flexible layer of muscle and skin."

"This creates a thin but strong encasement for the lungs. In the case of The Arc, arches working in compression are held in place by tensioned anticlastic gridshells."
"These fields of gridshells appear to drape across the spaces between impossibly thin arches soaring overhead, giving a whimsy, intimacy and beauty to the space. Although the gridshells appear to hang from the arches, they actually hold them up," they added.
"The two systems together create a unique and highly efficient structure, able to flex under load allowing the structure to redistribute weight, easing localised forces on the arches," Thomas added.
Wavy Structure Covers the Play Field
The built structure adopts a unique shape with slim arches, looking extremely light in weight as if it were made with fabric. The undulating and robust bamboo canopy covers the pitch.
Children can seamlessly transition between the protected gym shelter and the playing field.
The new addition to the Green School raises the bar for sustainable education around the globe. The firm did research and development for several months to design a precise geometrical solution that enabled the structure to enclose a massive inner volume with minimal material use.
