The Gujarat state government's Diamond Research and Mercantile (DREAM) City project has been completed in four years, with the facility costing $388 million. This 'one-stop destination' caters to 65,000 diamond professionals such as cutters, polishers and traders.
It is equipped with modern features designed to reduce energy consumption by up to 50%, allowing it to attain a "platinum" rating from the Indian Green Building Council. Furthermore, a "radiant cooling" system is also incorporated; circulating chilled water beneath its floors, all aiding in keeping indoor temperature low.
Design Details
Morphogenesis' design, as described by co-founder Sonali Rastogi, has created a "level playing field" for both small and large companies. She characterized the concept as "democratic," with excellent access to amenities and facilities through one central corridor that replicates an airport terminal experience.
Every office is no more than seven minutes away from any of the building's access points, making sure everyone gets equal opportunities while working there.
The design was further inspired by findings from their study into the Indian diamond trade. Consequently, nine 1.5-acre courtyards were equipped with seats and water elements, forming informal meeting spaces where dealers conduct business in the open air – just like in traditional bazaars.
A long central corridor connects the offices in the building, resembling an airport terminal, and solar energy powers the building's common areas. A total of 4,700 office spaces and 131 elevators are incorporated into the building.
The International Institute of Diamond Grading and Research forms part of the new bourse complex, boasting a recreational zone and parking area spread across 2 million sq ft.
Surat: The Global Hub of Diamond Trading
Surat holds tremendous trading potential as 90% of the planet's diamonds are cut, crafted, polished, processed and finished here. Vallabhbhai Patel, Chairman of the Surat Diamond Bourse, projected an annual turnover of $27 billion.
Modi praised the building's architecture as a symbol of Surat's diamond industry's growth and dynamism. In addition to boosting India's economy and creating job opportunities, he stated ahead of the opening that the facility will serve as a hub for trade, innovation, and collaboration. "It also demonstrates India's entrepreneurial spirit." "It will serve as a hub for trade, innovation, and collaboration, which will boost our economy and create jobs," he said.
The project was completed in four years, including two years related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Prime Minister Modi will open the building later this year, and it will host its first occupants in November.
