The CSE report released in August 2022 revealed that India's C&D waste recycling rate is alarmingly low at just 1%. To address this, Re Sustainability and Kolkata Municipal Corporation have joined forces to build a new recycling plant in Kolkata.
This advanced facility is touted to revolutionize Kolkata's waste management system and sustainable construction, changing the way construction and demolition debris is dealt with by transforming it into recycled aggregates, bricks, and tiles. ReSL has stated in a press release that this could spur a circular economy within the construction sector.
This advanced wet technology plant will sort, crush, wash and screen C&D waste to produce recycled aggregate and pre-cast construction products. Furthermore, they plan to involve the local stakeholders such as NGOs, social enterprises and schools to spread awareness of this effective method for managing C&D waste. This will be the seventh such facility in India.
An Innovative Way To Deal With Construction And Demolition Rubbish
Kolkata, the culturally rich and strategically situated city in the Northeast corridor, is a prime destination for FDIs and real estate investments. As highlighted by a joint survey between Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Re Sustainability, it produces almost 1600 tons of Construction & Demolition (C&D) waste daily, most of which remains uncollected resulting in strategic parts of the city being littered.
The landfill of Dhapa has endured years of mounting waste, but with the inauguration of the C&D recycling plant, a period of environmental-friendly waste management is here.
Masood Mallick, the CEO of Re Sustainability, pointed out that their waste recycling plant in Kolkata will be of prime importance in tackling the town's output of 1600 tonnes of C&D rubbish daily, while simultaneously delivering the building sector with sustainable materials and keeping landfill area in check.
The company has managed to recover an impressive 92% of their C&D waste from landfill through efficient wet processing methods. In addition, Re Sustainability magnificently handled 30,000 tonnes of waste for the Supertech Tower demolition project in Noida.
