How Cork-Based Surfaces are Shaping the Future of Sustainable Interiors

When two design innovators join forces, the outcome is often a fusion of artistry, technology, and purpose. The Muratto x Momentum collection exemplifies this synergy, born out of a partnership between Momentum Textiles & Wallcovering and Muratto. Together, they have created a collection that not only redefines the aesthetics of interior surfaces but also reinforces a shared commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. From sound-absorbing feature walls to seamless, minimalist finishes, know on SURFACES REPORTER (SR) how these cork-based surfaces embody a new kind of surface aesthetics and protect the planet.

The Muratto x Momentum collaboration celebrates cork, a natural, renewable and biodegradable material known for its versatility, resilience and tactile appeal.

At its core, the Muratto x Momentum collaboration celebrates cork, a natural, renewable and biodegradable material known for its versatility, resilience and tactile appeal. The collection introduces two distinctive product lines, Organic Blocks and PrimeCork. The result is a dynamic surface range that combines contemporary elegance with ecological mindfulness, ideal for transforming homes, workplaces, hospitality environments and wellness spaces.

The emphasis on biophilic design makes this collection a natural fit for projects aligned with wellness, acoustic comfort and sustainable luxury.

The Organic Blocks series stands as the bold centerpiece of the collection, offering a visually striking yet functionally rich solution for modern interiors. Inspired by the patterns and rhythms of nature, it features nine Design Blocks with sculptural geometries that range from sleek, linear motifs to organic forms reminiscent of honeycombs and natural rock formations. Each piece functions as both a decorative and acoustic element, achieving sound absorption ratings (NRC 0.3–0.7) that make them ideal for spaces where serenity and sound clarity are key.

These handcrafted tiles transform cork into a luxurious surface material that rivals traditional finishes like paint or wallpaper.

Beyond its core shapes, Organic Blocks also includes Cork Strips, eight variations of linear profiles that add rhythm and structure to walls, and Acoustic Panels that enhance both performance and aesthetics. The series allows for limitless customization, inviting designers to create layered, three-dimensional compositions. Accessories such as modular lighting elements and natural moss infill pieces can also be integrated into the system.

While Organic Blocks brings texture and drama, PrimeCork channels refinement and sophistication. These handcrafted tiles transform cork into a luxurious surface material that rivals traditional finishes like paint or wallpaper. The tiles feature matte, velvety and metallic finishes with the colour palette ranging from rich terracotta and warm leather tones to cool champagne and deep charcoal hues. PrimeCork’s surface treatments highlight cork’s inherent warmth and texture. Whether used in a hospitality lobby, corporate lounge or residential feature wall, the tiles convey a sense of organic sophistication while ensuring durability and easy maintenance.

The materials are lightweight, recyclable and easy to install, reducing logistical emissions and labour intensity.

Both product lines embody Muratto’s zero-waste manufacturing philosophy, where every stage of production is optimized to eliminate excess and minimize carbon impact. Cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees without harming them, allowing the forests to regenerate naturally and continue absorbing carbon dioxide. This cyclical, low-impact process ensures that every piece of cork used in the Muratto x Momentum collection contributes positively to the environment. Additionally, the materials are lightweight, recyclable and easy to install, reducing logistical emissions and labour intensity. The emphasis on biophilic design makes this collection a natural fit for projects aligned with wellness, acoustic comfort and sustainable luxury.
