Pritzker Prize-winning architect Shigeru Ban, The founder of BIG- Bjarke Ingels and Danish–Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson are among the "distinguished thinkers and practitioners" have been chosen as representatives for the New European Bauhaus high-level roundtable.

These three specialists announced in a list of 18 "advanced thinkers and practitioners" will work as community ambassadors. They will help strengthen the EUs actions for sustainability, urbanism, engineering, environmental and social benefits in the architecture, arts, and design sector by the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in October 2020. European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen revealed the Plans for the New European Bauhaus in 2020 during her opening State of the Union address to the European parliament. "This is not just an environmental or economic project: it needs to be a new cultural project for Europe," Von der Leyen explained. "I want NextGenerationEU to kickstart a European renovation wave and make our Union a leader in the circular economy."
The New European Bauhaus initiative took its name from the most significant and influential German design school founded by Walter Gropius in 1919 and operated until 1933. The school unified arts and crafts so that the principles of mass production get combined with an individual artistic vision.This new cultural project is established to move Europe towards a circular economy. The project will also aim “to invest the European Green Deal" – a set of policies specified by the European Commission to make Europe climate neutral by 2050.

The project released as part of the European Unions €750 billion coronavirus recovery plan is aimed to create "a bridge between the world of science and technology and the world of art and culture."
Three Phases
The New European Bauhaus is planned as three phases- Co-design, Delivery and Dissemination.
An announcement by the European Union said that these phases would "partly operate in parallel, as individuals and communities interested in the first ideas are most likely to become partners to deliver and scale up the initiative."

"The New European Bauhaus engages early through open conversations to shape the concept in a large co-creation process. In parallel, the initiative needs to develop a framework of deliveries, to align with the ongoing planning of the Multi-annual Financial Framework," it added.

The list includes several names from different professions and disciplines, like Innovation advisor to the grassroot activist Sheela Patel, European Commission Michela Magas, biologist and ecologist Thiëmo Heilbron, architect and set designer Pia Maier Schriever, urbanist Eszter Dávida, to name a few.
According to the planners, this diverse medley of experts from a variety of fields is "crucial for the success" of the initiative.

The delivery phase of the initiative will begin in September 2021.
During this stage, the setup and implementation of NEB pilots will start. They will closely be scrutinized and followed in a community of practice manner to share the lessons learned from these initial experimentations. Then, start the dissemination phase meaning to diffuse the good ideas and plans across Europe and beyond. This phase will be all about networking and knowledge sharing. This will include finding open replicable methods, solutions and prototypes and make them accessible to localities, cities, architects and designers.
