Reims 502 created a huge mansion in Querétaro, Mexico, with a warm walnut and black basalt finish. Eduardo Reims and Andrea Maldonado finished the 1000 square foot Reims 502 residence on a quarter-acre land in 2023 and christened it Casa Basaltica. The architects faced a difficult task in designing a residence that could offer a private interior space for its occupants yet still showcase the beautiful view the area afforded. The solution they chose was to reverse what the neighbouring houses had done and place the living spaces on the ground floor. Here, four suites form a layering sawtooth transition complete with a screened porch.
Movable Shutters Made from Thin Basalt Stone Bars
To further promote privacy and temperature control, movable shutters were built from thin basalt stone bars, providing both blinds for privacy and thermal buffering to reduce air conditioning needs.
The intersection of Style and Comfort
This residence stands as an admirable example of how style and comfort can co-exist in perfect harmony with nature's wonders.
On the top floor are all the public areas, including the living room, dining room, kitchen, and terrace, which are surrounded by a large garden and a swimming pool. To provide an additional layer of privacy, the upper floor rooms have been placed behind the perimeter of the home on the park side. A side courtyard provides natural ventilation and lighting for the service areas located underground.
